Prostate Cancer, More Harmful to Young Men?

Recent study published journal Cancer reported that prostate cancer occurs in young adult men at higher risk than if the cause of death experienced by men who are aged (elderly).

In an age of instant modern and versatile, the incidence of cancer cases reported continues to rise. Environment and lifestyle that one is often blamed as the cause. So is cancer that was once commonly found in older people, are now also reaching young adults. Just mention that many prostate cancer attacks men aged 50 years and over, is also not infrequently suffered by young adult males.

In fact, according to reports a new study in the United States, advanced prostate cancer experienced by young adult men at higher risk of death than those experienced by older men.

Expert pathology and urology at the University of Washington, Dr. Lin DanielW, revealed that prostate cancer can occur in young adult men and the average disease control. Only, those who suffer from cancer at more advanced stages of the disease is usually worse than if the same thing experienced by older men.

"Among patients with advanced prostate cancer, the chance of death in young male cancer patients was three times higher than patients in other age groups," said the doctor who served as chairman of the writing team of the study.

Lin presented the conclusions based on analysis of data from 318 774 men in America who diagnosed prostate cancer between 1988 to 2003 period. During the period is indeed found many young American men diagnosed with prostate cancer.

This is probably due to the local government when it was really to encourage early detection (screening) of cancer. "Screening tend no longer useful if the tumor in the body of the man was already dilated," said Dr. Otis W. Brawley of the American Cancer Society.

Comments Brawley imply doubt about the benefit of prostate cancer screening tests or so-called PSA (prostate-specific antigen). PSA is an enzyme that removed the prostate gland which serves to dilute the liquid to facilitate the movement of sperm ejaculation.

In normal circumstances, only a little PSA into the bloodstream, but if there is prostate inflammation or tissue damage, the levels of PSA in the blood increases. Over the years, PSA screening is still controversial because a number of reports which revealed that routine PSA testing is not effective enough to reduce death rates from this cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society guidelines (which is also being reviewed), screening is recommended do men begin to age 50, and 45 for high risk.

"Those who are at high risk is a family (father or brother) of this disease. Also, a black man who for whatever reason tend to be more at risk of prostate cancer," said Brawley.

Related studies conducted Lim and his team, a specialist in pathology and urology at Duke University, Dr. Stephen Freedland, proposed that only natural if malignancy is found to be worse on prostate cancer suffered by young adult males, given the average level of new PSA screening was done since the age of 50.

"So, the fault, yes because of a late diagnosis had been so before I know cancer has spread," he said.

Meanwhile, himself pointed out that the main purpose of the study was not discussing cancer screening, but rather provide the learning and awareness about prostate cancer in young adult men. Thus, it can be as early as possible to identify high-risk cases so that they can quickly find the most appropriate type of therapy.

"For the doctors, we were told that the advanced-stage prostate cancer experienced by young adult males can be very dangerous, so should be treated aggressively with appropriate methods," he said.

Worldwide, prostate cancer is cancer the second largest cause of death of men after lung cancer. No less than 254 000 people die per year from this deadly disease. Doctors routinely recommend PSA blood test to men over 50 years, with the belief that aggressive handling on any type of cancer is much better than just wait without doing any treatment.

However, in some cases, there are also characters that tumors need to grow more slowly and take years to become malignant. Keep in mind also that every man who entered the age of 45 chance of having prostate gland enlargement. If enlargement occurs redundantly to swell for citrus fruit, the effect can suppress the flow of urine through the urethra.

This condition is called BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) which usually cause complaints difficult urination. Cases of BPH is estimated to hit around 15 percent of men aged 40 years and 60 percent of men aged 50 years. Although not life threatening, patients generally need to be treated with surgery. As a precaution, experts recommend men to exercise regularly to reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
