False Positive-Improved on PSA Test

prostate cancer

Increased false-positive increase in PSA is the PSA increases are caused by conditions other than prostate cancer. For example, benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) and infection or inflammation of the prostate (prostatitis) from any cause can increase PSA. Note also that even a rectal examination or an ejaculation within 48 hours in advance can sometimes increase the PSA. Increases the false positive, usually located on the restriction of 4 to 10, but they could rise as high as 25 to 30. At these levels this high, however, caution in the interpretation of these tests is guaranteed as a prostate cancer may have been present. Diseases are not the prostate or infections, medicines, foods, smoking, and alcohol did not cause increases in false positive PSA.

The ability of PSA tests to detect prostate cancer (called sensitivity of the test) is high. Reason for this is that most patients, although not all of them, with prostate cancer have a borderline or an abnormal increase in PSA. The ability of tests to exclude other diagnoses diagnosis (called the specificity of the test), however, is lower because of other conditions that can lead to increases in false positive PSA.
