A study conducted in the United States concluded that selenium and vitamin E supplements does not effectively prevent the growth of prostate cancer. In fact, it might be a bit dangerous.
Studies involving 35 thousand men find these two supplements, taken either simultaneously or separately, are not useful in the prevention of prostate cancer. "This information may help us understand why two nutrients that are believed to be able to prevent the formation of prostate cancer was not so," said Dr. Eric Klein of the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, who conducted the study.
Numerous previous studies assumed that the two supplements can prevent prostate cancer. Selenium and vitamin E is a compound that blocks chemical reactions that can destroy cells and DNA.
"Study data show two trends that are worrisome, but not statistically significant, ie the number of cases is slightly higher prostate cancer found in men who only take vitamin E. In contrast, the number of cases of diabetes was slightly higher among men who took selenium alone," said U.S. National Cancer Institute who helped the implementation of the study.
